Ancient murals painted ages ago have a precious cultural heritage, but coupled withnatural weathering,vandalism and disasters, with tourism develops and other reasons,most of them are subject to varying degrees of damaged. Image inpainting is the processto reconstruct lost of deteriorated parts in images according to the mathematical model,and it is one of the most important research content in image processing area. Virtualrestoration of the ancient murals is combine the modern digital image inpaintingtechnology and the traditional mural restoration together. Repairing the murals bynon-contact inpainting could avoid the secondary damage to the murals caused bytraditional repair methods, and convenient to virtual exhibit the murals. It is an effectiveway of protect the murals.This paper analyze the main problems in the murals protection and the purpose andsignificance of the murals virtual restoration,illustrate the theoretical foundation status,trends and applications of use inpainting the murals virtual restoration.Summarizes themodels and methods of the exemplar-based image inpainting algorithm. On this basis,image inpainting algorithm led by the contourlet coefficients and color recovery systembased on color mural knowledge are proposed.1.Research of image inpainting algorithm led by the contourlet coefficients. Take thepolo tombwall paintings that unearthed of The tang dynasty ZhangHuai prince’s tombfor example, study the image inpainting algorithm led by the contourlet coefficients,to achieve that images with different energy can be inpainted adaptively throughappropriate strategies. Extracted the contourlet coefficients of the original image toanalyze texture information of the image, improve the priority calculation formula. Byintroducing a factorβto estimate texture information, to optimize the inpainting order,to repair complex vein parts first. The experimental results show that this method canavoid image blur and mosaic effect effectively,and reduce the time complexity of thealgorithm.2. Designed the color recovery system of digital mural based on the Five Colors.Analysis the fading or discoloration reasons and processes of the ancientcommon paints,and based on the traditional five colors system.Classified the traditionalChinese colors In the RGB color model,and designed the color recovery system ofdigital mural based on the Five Colors to achieved a virtual restoration of ancient muralscolor.
