Computer-aid3D modeling has been one of the important areas of computer applications, especially in industrial design, architectural decoration, virtual reality, entertainment, education and other fields. With the development of computer science, based on the needs ofthe new era of distributed and collaborative working, traditional visual steering has facingnew demands and challenges. Combining computer collaborating work theory with computergraphics, will bring new areas of applications for computer vision, such as distance learning, collaborative design, virtual conference rooms etc.; But importing3D technology to computercollaborative platform will bring various problems to be solved.Currently researches on collaborative3D modeling is mainly about building networkrelated applications on existing network3D platform, but combining the theory ofcollaboration to traditional3D modeling studies are still rare, especially those based on adistributed network environment, how to effectively transmit3D scenes and model data, andto describe the collaborative scene data in a natural way, are becoming core issues to establishuniversal collaborative3D platform. This research is built on the analysis of the basis of needs and problems of specificapplication scenarios for collaborative3D modeling issues raised by the new distributedcollaborative environment, aimed at carrying out completed visual steering architecture foruniversal collaborative modeling applications. The main contents include:1. Proposed a universal architecture for collaborative3D modeling platform, which regardabstracted3D scene representation as the core, integrating models, scenes, users, configuration management and collaboration module, forming a completed and universalsolution.2. Conducted data abstraction on the3D scene and presented an abstracted model for3Dscene. In this model the basic structure of3D scene was abstracted, and other data forcollaborative work are added, including semantic information, user authority, LOD (level of detail), version, therefore forming the basis data structure for collaborative3Dmodeling platform.3. Proposed the concept of user operation and batch operations which abstract userinteractions to3D scene, including operation object, operation type, operation value andbased versions. Multiple operations will be combined to form a user batch operation foruse of scene updates and modeling submits.4. Based on concept scene structure, scene synthesis algorithm is proposed for the synthesisof cooperative operation among multiple users, and scene composition conflicts solutionsare proposed. User profile based3D scene assembling method is proposed. Under theguidance of user profiles, the abstracted scene would be assembled into operable andrender-able scene which meets user requirements.Through researches and the results presented above, an entire collaboration oriented visualsteering architecture is presented and laid the foundation for universal collaborative3Dmodeling platform. A real collaborative3D system for the application of room decoration wasbuilt to validate the proposed architecture. The results show that from the functionalcompleteness and efficiency synergies both demonstrate the effectiveness of the entirearchitecture, which provides reference value for universal framework of collaborative3Ddesign and related applications.
