The rapid development of Web Services and the emerging standards bring newimpetus to the development of GIS, by which variety of heterogeneous, distributedGIS data and functionality can be seamlessly integrated to achieve trulycross-platform and interoperability. However, the traditional Web service which isdescribed by WSDL and retrieved by the service registered Center UDDI can notsupport semantic information. The query based on key words always causes resultincomplete and inaccurate. And in practical application, the functionality of singlegeographic information service is limited after all, so combination of series of relatedgeographic information services is needed, in order to form service chains to meetuser’s requirement. So this article introduces semantic Web and Agent technology,with the help of semantic information and multi-Agent system, serivce or servicechains that meet user’s requirement can be found out from the distributed geographicinformation services, and the best results are selected to implement geographicinformation services combination. The main research contents include:(1) Adopt geographic ontology to describe geographic information Web services,including the establishment of geographic ontology, and geographic information Webservice conversion from WSDL to OWL-S, in order to achieve thesemantics of geographic information services. This step is the cornerstone of theresearch.(2) Research on geographic information service matching and combinationalgorithm. On the basis of computation of universal ontology concept similarity andgeographical domain ontology concept similarity, to design and achieve geographicinformation services matching algorithms and service combination algorithms arestudied.(3) The design and implementation of geographic information servicecombination prototype system based on Agent. Adopting multi-Agent system basedon JADE platform and Semantic Web technology, the functionalities and systemstructure of the prototype was studied and implemented. The functionalities of systemare tested by a specific service instance, and the experiment results indicate that the prototype system can better achieve geographic information service combination, andalso expose some shortcomings, which is the direction of further study.
