It has been more than1000years since the birth of shadow play. Affected bymodern fast-paced lifestyle and diverse forms of entertainment, shadow playgradually disappears from sight. Limited by location, media, language, and culture,the materials and works of shadow play has difficulty in spreading. In recent years,some local museums and web sites were established but had little effect, due to poortransportation and boring contents.In order to effectively spread and develop the art of shadow play, interactivedigital shadow play animation is proposed to meet all kinds of requirement ofdifferent people. To simplify the creation procedure of digital shadow play animation,enhance the interactivity of shadow play works, and reduce the difficulty of shadowplay real time performance, shadow play characters and motions are abstracted andclassified, and a universal skeleton model is proposed for specific character types.Based on inverse kinematics, a scheme is designed to describe shadow play bonesanimation. The animation description scheme defines basic motions of characters bycontrolling the position and rotation properties of skeletons, and defines complicatedmotions by a superposition of basic motions. The definition of motions is based onskeleton models instead of a particular character, which grants the schemeuniversality.Finally, to verify the effectiveness of animation description scheme, someexperiments are designed, to prove when dealing with motions of a character of agiven type, the scheme is universal, which can apply to different characters,meanwhile, to prove the consistency of the motion path and the expected one, whendescribing complicated motions as superposition of basic motions, thus to verify thatthe scheme can simplify the creation procedure of digital shadow play animation,reduce the difficulty of shadow play real time performance, and enhance theinteractivity of shadow play works.
