Time-varying nonlinear dynamical systems are most commonly seen in engineeringworld. Due to nonlinearity in state variation and coupling effects between differentsubsystems, there is no general solution to the controller design for such systems. Inthis thesis, two typical cases will be studied and the control strategies will bedeveloped respectively. The first application is on supersonic wind tunnel systemcontrol. The control strategy is developed by exploring the flow characteristics in thetunnel and using the state estimation provided by Extended Kalman Filter. The resultsdemonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively control the stagnation pressurein the test section and maintain the target pressure during the stable stage of theblowdown process. The second example is on power management for electric vehicle.The characteristics of two key elements: battery and motor are examined carefully.The power flow strategy is then developed accordingly based on this analysis. It canbe seen from the simulation results that the proposed controller works well in variousroad conditions.
