Next generation network (NGN), which features soft-switch as keytechnology, is a new type of public telecommunication network based on IPtechnology. With a variety of voices, data, videos and other integratedinformation transmitted through this network, original traffic model (Poissonor Gaussian model) based on PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Networks) isno longer applicable. Instead, network traffic displays self-similarity features.Therefore, the study of network traffic based on self-similar theory hasbecome a very important topic.In this paper, the basic concepts of self-similar network models areintroduced, and then soft-switching network of Hongqiao Airport is analyzedwith its self-similarity. ZTE Netnumen31is employed to collect original dataof Hongqiao Airport soft-switching network traffic. R/S-AL algorithm isapplied to estimate the Hurst parameter. It is proved that the statisticalcharacteristic of soft-switch network traffic is self-similar. TheHASN-FARIMA mathematical model (Hongqiao Airport Soft-switchNetwork-FARIMA) is established based on these steps. The steps of modeling are introduced in detail. The model simulation and network trafficforecasting are realized with MATLAB tool. The residual statistical testproves that the traffic model can effectively reflect the real network trafficcharacteristics.The application based on HASN-FARIMA model is further studied thatthe telephone traffic between Hongqiao Airport soft-switching network andservice provider is predicted, and the redundancy of existing trunk resourcesis analyzed. Also, the performance requirements of basic IP networking,which serves the soft-switching network, were proposed and therefore fourkinds of common WAN links were analyzed to check the applicability for theNormal East VOIP network. Eventually, the Hongqiao Airport soft-switchingnetwork CRBT network traffic composition is analyzed and the CRBTpotential network traffic cause by the development of CRBT is predicted.Various experimental results show that the theory of self-similar networktraffic model with extensive scalability can effectively analyze networkperformance and possesses important theoretical value and practicalapplication prospect.
