Wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) are emerging as next generation access networks because they offer several advantages, such as large capacity, network security, easy management, and upgradability. With the increase of IP business, the number of subscribers and the types of business are increasing every year. Fault monitoring is essential to ensuring system reliability. Many fiber branches and remote nodes are the feature of WDM-PON structure. So the conventional fault detection technique is not suitable for WDM-POM. Therefore, an effective supervision mechanism to detect and localize the fault is important to maintain the network.After viewing and research the current problem of detection technique for WDM-PON, we using correlation method to realize precious fault location in WDM-PON, based on chaotic fiber laser technique of our previous research. The wide bandwidth and the tunable range of wavelength characteristic of chaotic fiber laser are conducive to improve the spatial resolution and numbers of channel.This technology is based on chaotic fiber laser, the research work is mainly summarized as follows:1. The significance of this research work, the feature of WDM-PON technology is demonstrated. Analyzed the advantage and disadvantage of main fault location technology in WDM-PON.2. The erbium-doped fiber ring laser and the architectures of WDM-PON are simulated based on VPI software. The spectrum, frequency spectrum and time series of laser are mainly studied. The eye diagram can evaluate the effect of transmission distance on WDM-PON.3. The development of wavelength tunable fiber laser is introduced. The wavelength tunable range of the wavelength tunable chaotic fiber laser can cover C-band and L-band. The characteristic of chaotic fiber laser is not related to the change in wavelength. The results show that the characteristics of the output of the different wavelength have similar characteristics in time and frequency domain.4. The fault detection technique for WDM-PON is studied experimentally based on chaotic fiber laser. The results show that the precise location fault in WDM-PON is achieved. The dynamic range of approximately hundred kilometers and a spatial resolution of4cm, which is independent of measuring range, were obtained.5. We make a summary of our research work and give expectation.
