The shape feature of human bone’s mandible contains a wealth ofbiological information. It has been the major research object in many fields, due to its internal stability, difficult to be damaged by disguise and lessvulnerable to external environment influence, etc. For example, mandiblewas used to identify the origin of human beings in archaeology; in the fieldof forensic medicine, criminal cases were solved with the help of cranialcoincide technology; the mandible features were also evaluated by aestheticstandards in cosmetic surgery. With the advancement of technology, especially the widely used of Cone Beam CT, People can get complete andclear mandible image without vivisection, it provides the feasibility ofcomputer automated measurement and extraction mandible characteristics, and can greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of individualidentification. It has a very important significance in the field of individualidentification.According to the method of image processing, including threshold segmentation algorithm, mathematical morphology method and curvefitting method, etc. The experiment collected265cases of mandible imagesto locate and extract gonion and gnathion automatically by using computerprogramming language. The experimental results show that the method of finding themaximum curvature point with curve-fitting is an effect way to position thegonion in the cone beam CT mandible image. In the situation of withoutgold standards for positioning accuracy, the correlation analysis of thedistance can show a characteristic of positioning accurate, the accuracy ofits positioning was accepted by forensic experts, and it has a significantapplication value in the fields of skull image registration, forensicidentification and dentist operation plan.
