Frequency selective surface (FSS) is a two-dimensional periodic array, it can achieve selective reflection or transmission of the incident electromagnetic wave according to the need, and it’s essentially an electromagnetic spatial filter. It is widely used in electromagnetic compatibility, microwave communications, electronic warfare, military stealth and other fields at present and has great development prospects in the military and civilian aspects. It has a very important significance for the national defense and the strengthening of combat effectiveness to carry out the research on FSS.The finite element method (FEM) which is based on variational principle is an efficient numerical analysis method, it has a large advantage in the simulation of complex targets, and it’s easy to efficient storage and solving, so it’s widely used in various types of mathematical analysis and engineering problems.On the basis of analysis of the FSS technology and by using three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation software HFSS which is based on FEM, this article has completed the following works:1. This article studied the basic transmission characteristics of frequency selective surfaces and analyzed the common factors that affect the transmission characteristics of FSS, such as unit shape, unit size, dimensions and electromagnetic parameters of the dielectric layer, the unit period and so on; It studied the variation of the resonant frequency and the bandwidth of the FSS when the electromagnetic waves are at oblique incidence. It got a certain conclusion through these studies and made some explanations which have realistic directive significance in FSS design.2. This article used the equivalent circuit method to substitute an active FSS, analyzed the reasons of adjustable resonant characteristics of the active FSS and the HFSS simulation software has been applied to calculate the frequency characteristics when the active FSS is loaded with different reactance.3. Established FSS structure model that consists of star units loaded with dielectric layer; Through reasonable parameter optimization and by arranging the traditional FSS and the active FSS alternately, the article completed a design of a dual-band tunable FSS, expanding the range of application of this FSS structure.
