Laser radar (LiDAR, namely Light Detection and Ranging) data is an important data source of realization of city informatization. Foreign scholars have made a lot of research of LiDAR technology, and developed various kinds of building automatic extraction algorithm, however the domestic related research in the field is not yet mature. Since LiDAR data has high resolution and can be used on deprive Earth surface3D information which makes it become an effective resource to be used on a larger number of applications within urban area including urban design,3D visual city construction and development of solar energy. This article trying to make use of LiDAR point cloud data combine with high resolution satellites image to extract building information of the city and working on the appliance of solar energy within urban area. The process for this article including building extraction, expression of LiDAR data,3D scene, using solar irradiation model to calculate building’s solar irradiance and select the PV-suitable building roof tops by calculate the building’s solar efficient. Building extraction is the core technique which can be divided into two groups, one is using filtering method to extract LiDAR pulse returns and directly get building footprint and the other one is combine LiDAR data with other data by using methods including Threshold-Based to extract buildings. Experiment and discussion have been made for both two group of methods Extracting information from non-rectangle rooftop buildings, the irregular shape of rooftop and roof top textures’ difference had been considerate. The result shows that filtering method can extract detailed building roof top information while Object-Based method can segment building rooftop into very small pieces; Mask-Based extraction method can get an efficient building result for calculating solar irradiance, and Threshold-Based method can primarily eliminate vegetation. Since those methods have their own advantages, this article make use of those advantages such as by using Threshold-Based method to deal with image preprocessing and using Mask-Based method to extract raster buildings to calculate solar irradiance by using Niko Lukac’s solar irradiance model. Finally with the help of3D scene of LiDAR point cloud the suitable building roof tops for installing PV-panels have been selected.
