Due to congenital defects, in most cases, the deaf-mute just only canreceive information from others, but can not express their subjective desires by voice. Therefore, designing a voice expression system for the deaf-mute may make themenjoy a better social life. Based on reviewing the development of existing deaf-mutecommunication technology at home and abroad, a portable voice expression systemfor the deaf-mute with low cost, high relibility and simple operation is proposed. Two kinds of schemes on deaf-mute voice erpression systems are introduced in thispaper in detail, and the feasibility of these schemes are analyzed as well. The first scheme is based on a16-bit Sunplus SPCE061A MCU under thecondition of considering cost, power consumption and performance. In this scheme, input circuits of keys are embeded in a special glove and users input messages bypressing different parts of the glove.6763commonly used chinese characters and120daily languages’ pronunciation files are stored in a SPR4096chip aftercompression. SPCE061A gets key operation codes based on hand press action. Afterthe program matches the input automatically, corresponding input audio files will befound in SPR4096and joined together to play out complete sentences. The second scheme is based on ARM under the condition of considering easyoperation, convenient transplantation and the improvement of the output voicequality. The paper proposes using a touch screen or3D motion-sensing controlled asthe system input device, TFT as the system display device and STM32F103withARM core as the system controller. Chinese characters found in the character librarywill be displayed on TFT according to the touching input, meanwhile, correspondingaudio files stored in SD card will be decoded by VS1053though SPI interface andjoined together to play out complete sentences. After introducing the hardware and software of these two deaf-mute voiceerpression systems in detail, experimental investigation was conducted respectivelyon the two systems. Both sets of the systems have realized the function of manuallyinput sentences, automatic output speech and playing daily languages. Experimental results show that the output speech of these two systems is acceptable both in clarityand naturalness. These systems make it possible and convenient for the deaf-mute tocommunicate with others and provide a reference for related research in future.Thees systems have reached the expected design requirements basically.
