To overcome the shortsatge of traditional measurement methods for runoff and sediment concentration,With the development of science and technology, many scholars began to increase the requirement of sediment measurement gradually, that is measuring instrument can reflect water containing sand situation quickly, accurately and timely, thus a lot of indirect measurement methods appeared.The popular methods include spectrophotometry, infrared method, capacitance method, the vibration method, ultrasonic method, laser method, gamma ray method, the researchers used the above method through lots of experiments to measure the runoff and sediment concentration, the final test result is that these methods have shortcomings, these methods either measurement limited scope of the problem, or problems of precision is not high,this paper use the time method and illumination method were used to measure runoff and sediment concentration respectively to designe the system of automatic detection device,that can detect runoff and sediment concentration automatically in the absence of intervention.Firstly this paper introduced the structure and principle of mechanical devices and electronic control system, and then studies of sunlight sediment concentration measurement through the experimental study and numerical analysis, finally gives the optimum distance between the light source and the light sensor and the corresponding fitting polynomial, The experimental results show that, the light can accurately measure low sediment concentration in runoff solution,to overcome the defect of the existing technology and low measurement precision, the experimental study on the design theory and the testing device, and finally indicates the system automatic detection device with the slope runoff and sediment concentration measurement.
