Multi-view video is a group of videos that simultaneously captured by a group of camerasfrom different angles of the same scene, which includes a large number of three-dimensionalscene information. This kind of video presents a strong three-dimensional scene to people. Inaddition, multi-view video has the interoperability feature. Users can swap the views to watchcontents of the different views according to their preferences. However, because of the largeamount of data, multi-view video has a high demand of the storage capacity and the channelbandwidth which hinders its development. In recent years, improving the efficiency ofmulti-view video coding has become the focus of the research. To meet the need of the real timecoding of multi-view, the encoding algorithm should be optimized to reduce the encoding timewhich maintaining the PSNR and the bit rate unchanged..To meet the demand of the development of MVC, after analyzing of the principle of fastsearch algorithm TZSearch in JMVC (Joint Multi-view Video Coding), this article proposes anoptimal algorithm for multi-view video coding which has mainly optimized on two aspects.According to the theory that circle-shaped pattern is the most appropriate search pattern and thedirectional center-biased characteristic, the octagon-based search pattern is used to replace the8-point diamond search pattern (or8-point square search pattern) in the initial search step ofTZSearch algorithm, which improves the searching precision. This dynamic search pattern isappropriate for both the intra-view prediction and inter-view prediction. In addition, a thresholdis set up to quite the initial search in time after finding the optimal point. The experimental results show that, the optimal algorithm Oct-TZSearch reduces thenumber of search points substantially and speeds up the encoding process of multi-view video. Invarious testing sequences, the search time of the motion estimation and the disparity estimationreduces about80%and the total encoding time reduces about40%, which are dramatic incomparison with the approximately unchanged PSNR(decreases0.03dB) and bit rate(increases1.7%). This will be helpful to realize the real-time encoding of multi-view video coding.
