As one of competitive solutions for the future short distanceand high speed wireless communication systems,Ultra-wideband(UWB) technology has been one global hot spot ofantenna study field recently. The communication speeds andcapacities of UWB systems are directly affected by theperformances of their antennas. UWB planar antennas can meetthose needs, because of their small size, low cost, easily integrating, and become popular with scholars. So UWB planar antennas havebeen the focus of antenna design and research field.First, this paper introduces briefly UWB technology, andsummarizes the researching history, the current studying status, anddevelopment trend of UWB antennas.Next, this article introduces the basic theory and theparameters of UWB antenna and summarizes some classicalresearching and designing techniques of UWB antennas, includingsmall-size, extension frequency and band-notched techniques.Several analytical and numerical methods of analyzing antennaperformances are generalized in this paper. Then, based on the traditional rectangular microstrip antennas, one compact dual band-notched UWB polar antenna is designed andfabricated. The dual band-notched characteristic, which effectivelyrestrained the potential interference between the UWB system andboth of the WiMAX system and the WLAN system effectively, isachieved by inserting a F-shaped slot in the patch.Last, two compact band-notched UWB polar antennas, basedon CPW-fed planar antenna, are designed. They are dualband-notched UWB antenna based on tree-shaped fractalconfiguration and triple band-notched UWB antenna based on Kochfractal configuration respectively. Both antennas satisfy the 3.1~10.6GHz UWB demand of FCC and the demand of satellitecommunication systems with impedance band from2.5GHz to30GHz. Then the dual band-notched UWB antenna based ontree-shaped fractal configuration is fabricated and measured.Experimental and simulated results demonstrate the two antennasare especially suitable for UWB communication systems.
