With the rapid development of China’s economy, the shield tunneling machine hasbecome the essential equipment of our resource development and infrastructureconstruction. However, the harsh working environment makes it hard for the manualinspection and replacement of the shield tool. Now the abrasion monitoring system ofthe disc cutters on shields has become the core technology that the domestic andforeign manufacturers race to develop. To carry out the relevant technology research isalso to insure the construction safe and efficient of shield tunneling machine.The paper analyzes the working environment, working principle and wear form ofthe disc cutters, designs an abrasion monitoring system of the disc cutters on shieldsbased on the technology of wireless communication, serial communication, sensor andvirtual instrument. The paper gives the overall design and solution of modules ofsoftware and hardware. It also deeply analyzes the function characteristics andperformance requirements of the system. Detection signal is difficult to transport whencutters work in exceptional environments. To solve this problem, a mixed wired andwireless communication mode is presented and communication mechanism which canadapt to the bad communication environment is designed. According to the wearreasons and influence factor of the disc cutters, the paper chooses the suitabledetection scheme and develops a non-contact wear sensor which has a compactstructure and high measurement working in harsh environment. Using HW/SW(hardware and software) co design technique achieves ultra-low power consumptionand ensures the long lifecycle of the free-maintenance system. After HW/SW design ofterminal node and transit route, module and function debugging have been made. Also,the paper designs the control center software to achieve the measurement controlsystem building and managing, online data transmission and display, historical datastorage and query, key data discovery and processing as well as system informationoutput and Interaction with a friendly man-machine interface. Finally, the functions ofthe system are on-line tested. The abrasion monitoring system of the disc cutters on shields in this paper canmonitor the wear situation of the disc cutters in the harsh working environment and itsinspection accuracy can be as high as1mm. It can distinguish wear states and detectthe abnormal status of eccentric wear, breakage and stalling. The sensor node cancontinue working for100days without maintenance. It has good popularized value.
