Because of ground penetrating radar’s good resolution,high efficiency, easy operationand no damage detection, it’s widely used in various engineering fields. Contourlet transformcan well represent the geometry structural properties of the image,at the same time,it caneffectively achieve the image’s local, multi-directional, multi-resolution unfolds, Contourlettransform is applied in the processing of ground-penetrating rad ar image processing, it willbe better to reflect the ground penetrating radar image details, outlines and other information.In this paper, firstly, study the GPR electromagnetic theory, the working principle anddetection capability. Secondly, study the theory Contourlet transform, study Laplace pyramidfilters and directional filter group in the Contourlet transform. Then, study the groundpenetrating radar data format, reading ground penetrating radar data in the form of imagedisplay, research and analysis the features and informations of ground-penetrating radarimages, through study the image feature extraction algorithm based on Contourlet transformand PCA algorithm, use the improved PCA algorithm and Contourlet transform to form theimproved image feature extraction algorithm based on Contourlet transform, as groundpenetrating radar image is formed by the reflection of electromagnetic waves, to make theprocessed ground-penetrating radar images more intuitive to be expressed, using theK-Means++algorithm for processing the final result. Finally, using PCA algorithm and theimproved image feature extraction algorithm based on Contourlet transform to improve thenatural view of the process, the results show the improved image feature extraction algorithmbased on Contourlet transform with good results.Finally,through the research on the tunnel measured ground-penetrating radar imagesusing the image feature extraction algorithm based on Contourlet transform for extractingfeatures of theground-penetrating radar images, combined the feature extraction of groundpenetrating radar images with K-Means++algorithm to get the final deal. As a result, theexperimental results show that process the ground penetrating radar images by this method,it’s more intuitive and effective for users to make the ground penetrating radar imageinterpretation.
