Along with the expansion of wireless networks and intelligent mobile devices, therequirement of Video On Demand service had grown in rapid. While real-time streamingconfronts network access troubles and general progressive streaming lacks of QoS support,HTTP adaptive streaming technology turn out to be an effective way to overcome theseproblems. Furthermore, being the latest international technology standard, MPEG-DASHprovides a common interface to achieve adaptive streaming over HTTP and becomes ahotspot among researchers and developers.By study and analyze the MPEG-DASH standard, this thesis brought up a VOD systemstructure that aims at high applicability, low coupling and cross-platform services. Itsarchitecture can be divided into server module, distribute module and media player module.Server module handles VOD requests and arranges media content. In order to enhanceparallel request control, server module works in the form of assembly line that benefit inflexible and scalable module struts. A cloud storage service is involved to solve the mediastorage problems, meanwhile it also extends VOD service usage and lower system coupling.Distribute module builds on HTTP server middleware. It maintains media transportingand provides flexible interfaces to meet the need of different system usages.It is of cross-platform capabilities by taking advantages of JavaScript technology inmedia player module. In purpose of improving the service availablity, two compatible displayschemes are settled in case of user’s browser doesn’t support Media Source Extensions API.This thesis provides the design and implement of VOD system based on MPEG-DASH.The functional test results showed that the system is advantage in high applicability andcompatibility. Furthermore, a general discuss of the relationship between media encodingspeed and quality is provided. By balancing these factors, VOD system can benefit in a higheravailability.
