The development of science and technology makes the modern products manufacturing toward amore intelligent and automated direction, but the design and development process of product aredifficult to be completely replaced by machines. Traditional manual clay modeling is still animportant part in the design and development process of product, with which designers can designproducts to meet the needs of the people. Now, with the help of computer aided industrial designsystem, designers can shorten the product development cycle and improve the design process, butthere are many deficiencies whether in the underlying hardware technology or the realization ofhuman-computer interface. Virtual clay modeling system is in such a context. As the communicationmedium between the user and system, interaction interface is the basis for virtual clay modelingsystem to achieve, but also the main content of this paper.The methods and laws of interface design and implementation were explored in this paper. First,it summarized the basic knowledge of the clay model in the modern production process, and thenintroduced the current situation and development of related research field in virtual clay modelingsystem, analyzed the development of the interface study in different dimensions, proposed the conceptof virtual clay modeling system interface, which called spatial motion perception interaction interface.Secondly, starting from the design for the spatial motion perception interaction interface, it analyzedthe interactive characteristics of the virtual clay modeling system, presented the design method of user-centered, activity-centered and aesthetics-based, proposed the basic design principle for spatialmotion perception interaction interface, which based on summarizing the design principles of generalinterfaces. Third, it summarized the metaphor and the design models applied to spatial motionperception interaction interface, raising the metaphor for the production process of clay modeling, itwas also applied two design model to the design of virtual clay modeling system, and discussing itssignificance. Finally, the practice of interface design and implementation was made, presented a piemenu which was more suitable for spatial motion perception interaction interface, and then designedexperiments to analyze the menu’s interaction efficiency under the spatial gesture control and on thedesktop display, designed and realized a more high-fidelity visual prototype, combining experimentalresults with Metro UI design style.
