With the rapid development of Internet technology, the ever-increasingcommunication business will consume more and more energy. It has become a hot topicwidely concerned by researchers that how to reduce the energy network consumption andto improve the system efficiency. In view of Ethernet, an energy saving strategy based onthe periodic sleep is proposed and the system performance is analyzed in this paper.Firstly, considering the energy efficiency and system response performance of theEthernet, introducing the mechanism of sleep-delay, pre-awake and split timing to IEEE802.3az, we propose an Ethernet energy saving strategy with single rate transmissionbased on the periodic sleeping. Within the discrete time field, we build a multiple vacationqueue model with sleep-delay and N strategy. By analyzing the model with the method ofthe PGF (probability generating function), the expressions of the energy saving rate andthe average response time are given.Secondly, concerning the unbalanced link load caused by burst transmission of data,by combining the ARL (Adaptive Rate Link) and LPI (Low Power Idle) and we proposean Ethernet energy saving strategy with double rate transmission based on periodicsleeping. We construct a multiple vacation queue model with N strategy, single thresholdand variable service rate. For this model, we build a three-dimensional Markov chain, andprovide steady-state distribution. The expressions of the system energy saving rate and theframe average response time are given.Thirdly, through the numerical experiments and simulation experiments on theenergy saving strategies proposed above, the influences of the sleep-delay timer,sleep-cycle timer and pre-awake counter, the threshold of rate convertion and the low rateof the system on the energy saving efficiency and the average response time are given.Then, the effectiveness of the two kinds of energy saving strategy is varified.Finally, based on the trade-off between the system energy saving efficiency and theaverage response time, a object function is built. The values of sleep-delay timer,sleep-cycle timer, pre-awake counter, the threshold of rate convertion and the low rate of the two Ethernet energy saving strategies above are optimized.
