Embedding watermarks into images can have many applications, however, the original images will inevitably surfer from some deformation when common technology of watermark is involved (in). Though, sometimes the deformation is very slight, and can’t be detected by human eyes, it is unacceptable in some fields, such as medical images, military images, legal images and so on. Consequently,a new technology named as reversible digital watermarking is favor in the above fields, which allows the receiver to accurately detect watermark information and non-destructively restore the original image at the same time. Hence, the reversible digital watermarking technique not only can protect the authenticity of the received images, but also can ensure their accuracy. This paper first gives an introduction of the concept, nature, classification and development of the reversible digital watermarking. Then it reviews the common fragile algorithm for reversible digital watermarking, and comparison and analysis are done. Finally, the author presents a new fragile algorithm for reversible watermarking, based on the image authentication and histogram shifting. This algorithm first does ternary coding for the watermark information, then embeds it through bi-directional translation of histogram of the image..Compared with traditional algorithms, the algorithm has such advantages as low computational complexity, less image distortion and so on, in the case of relatively small embedding watermark information.
