| News plays an ever-increasing role in the current society. The advent of internetmagnificently facilitates people’s access to information. News online, as a boomingmember among the media family, features its rich contents, various modalities andtimeliness. Sport fans prefer online news to traditional approaches for they can catchup with sports event, and look into every imaginable detail about the game.Based on the framework of Appraisal theory, the thesis attempt to classify andcompare the evaluative resources in Chinese and English cyber space news. Contraryto the traditional method, Appraisal theory stretches its research from the grammaticalrealm to the lexical level, valuing the study on the speaker’s attitude.In the thesis, I chose20pieces of cyber sports news,10for each language. Theappraisal resources in them have been marked, classified and compared. The thesisattempt to answer the following two research questions:1. How the author realize interpersonal meaning with the evaluative resourceswithin the three sub-systems of the Appraisal System？2. the similarities and differences between Chinese and English cyber sportsnews evaluative resourcesResearch find out that the cyber sport news writers realize interpersonal meaningwith the uneven employment of evaluative resources.Both English and Chinese sports news have uneven distribution of evaluativeresources, and the percentage and the pattern of Attitude and Engagement seems alikeat the basic level.Under Attitude, there is a clear inclination of adopting positive affect in Englishnews, while in Chinese news, no obvious preference has been spotted.Interestingly, in Chinese news, the monikers, nicknames and the addressees signalevaluative meaning to some degree, nevertheless, there is no counterpart in Englishnews. Aiming at similar readership, dealing with the same sports events, there is nowonder some similarities exist between the cyber sports news of the two languages.Nevertheless, the innate distinctions between English and Chinese, the individualexperiences of sports reporter, even some accidental factor might lead to thedifference. The two chosen sports events are played on USA and French respectively,which actually hindered Chinese reporters from getting the face-to-face report withthe players. |
