The fourth generation mobile communication technology includes the OrthogonalFrequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology, its good spectral efficiency andresistance to fading channel capacity, high-profile. However, OFDM technology hasshortcomings, mainly in the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR), which will worsen thesystem performance and bit error rate, affect the communication quality. To this end, how toreduce Peak-to-Average Power Ratio of the system and how to reduce the transmission biterror rate become a research hotspot. This paper started from the development of the OFDM system, in turn introduced thebasic concepts and principles, system components and key technologies of the OFDM system. Then it focuses on the PAPR and error rates of the OFDM system. Though analysis andcomparison the traditional methods of PAPR reduction, for its lacks suggest for improvements.Focus is through in-depth analysis and comparison of the compression algorithm, throughappropriate improvements to further reduce the PAPR, and with the OFDM system channelestimation algorithm to reduce the bit error rate which is caused by the compression algorithm,in order to achieve a better transmission effect. The improved compression algorithm byincreasing the turning point of the compression and expansion’s transform, the cost of a smallamount of the expense of bit error rate, to significantly reduce the PAPR, and lesscomputation than the original algorithm, save computing time. In order to reduce the errorrate caused by the PAPR reduction, the introduction of a simple and easy to implementchannel estimation methods, thereby reducing the error rate, offset adverse effects by theincreasing error rate. Finally, through MATLAB simulation verify these ideas, and analyzetheir strengths and weaknesses, direction for the follow-up work.
