The establishment of science experimental class of C hina university of Petroleum is an active attempt to achieve our party and nation’s new requirements on talent training for higher education in the 21 st century, to eventually accomplish our school’s objective of innovation talent training. Optimization of science experimental class stude nts’ approaches to learning is both an important prerequisite for students’ self-development and one of the core contents of pedagogical reformation in our school.In order to understand the main characteristics of science experimental class students’ approaches to learning and provide certain reference for its teaching quality improvement, we selected sophomores from science experimental class as experimental group: 97 in total and also selected same grade students from school of geosciences as control group: 121 in total, tested these two groups respectively with the questionnaire <R-SPQ-2F> and the questionnaire of influencing factors of students’ approaches to learning.The results were showed that science experimental class students’ approaches to learning are more diverse than regular students’ and also have greater individual differences among students. For the selection of approaches to learning, there is significant difference between the two groups; more science experimental class students prefer to choose deep approach,but still about half of them need to transform their approaches to learning to adapt to the present study. After grouped science experimental class students by urban and rural, types of school, regions and education levels of parents, there is no significant difference in approaches to learning; but gender differences is very obvious, males are more inclined to choose surface approach than females. Learning interest, prior knowledge and ability, teaching approach, teachers guide, the difficulty of courses and their arrangement, time arrangement, the school atmosphere, the evaluation method are all important factors which would affect science experimental class students’ approaches to learning. Among these factors, four of the most important are following by the learning interest, prior knowledge and ability, the difficulty of courses and their arrangement & evaluation method. In view of the above, based on the purpose of promoting deep learning and objective achieve ment of innovative talents training, countermeasures were put forward in this study with three aspects: Firstly, making scientific and strict selection criteria and procedure, developing diverse talent selection channels to improve the selection mechanism. Secondly, building up the comprehensive curriculum system based on the project and problem-solving, carrying out the teaching methods matching the deep approach, setting up dynamic and humanized elimination mechanism to optimize the talent training process. Thirdly, exploring diverse student’s evaluation method based on the CDIO concept, referencing the education quality assessment system of TOPCARE-CDIO model to change the evaluation method.
