Math problems is everywhere in life, mathematics can solve the problems in real life. Since the 80 s,the educational circles began to focus on the topic of “problem solving”.There are a lot of researches on “problem solving” at home and abroad. These studies have different starting points and the footholds. In July 2001, the ministry of education issued the mathematics curriculum standard(experiment draft) of compulsory education which gives the related regulations to junior middle school students. So inwestigation and study on mathamatics problem solving abilitys of the students in junior middle school is very important. The paper focuses on the level of problem solving ability in mathematics problem of junior middle school students. With the background of the requirements on problem solving ability in new curriculum, with the breakthrough point of the function problem of junior middle school, the paper studies the function problem solving process of junior middle school students and analyzes the function problem solving ability of the students in depth. This paper expounds the background of selected topic on the study, the questions and significance of the research. Through the study of the mathematics curriculum standard(experiment draft) of compulsory education, and the related works on problem solving, mathematics problems solving and the abilities of mathematics problems solving, the paper gives the definition of problem solving, mathematics problems solving and the abilities of mathematics problems solving. At the same time, with the analysis of specific mathematical example and problem solving process, the paper puts forwards the four problem solving ability elements in the problem-solving process, which are the ability of reading comprehension, the ability of building problem solving model, the ability of answering and expressing and the ability of evaluating and reflecting. Then, given the definition of “secondary function problem” and teaching objectives, teaching requirements and teaching outline, the author set up the function test subjects and the two sets of function problem solving ability test for two grade of eight and nine. The author tested 198 students in the cities and towns of stratified random samples. Then, with the help of statistical software of SPSS, the author carried on the statistical analysis. The conclusions are following:In the aspect of the level of function problem solving ability:(1) The function problem solving ability of the students in grade eight and nine have significant difference.(2) The ability on a function and quadratic function in grade nine havesignificant differences.(3) The junior middle school students have no significant sex differences in function problem solving ability.(4) The junior middle school studengts in urban and rural have significant differences in function problem solving ability. In the aspect of development level of the elements in function problem solving ability:(1) In the process of function problem solving, the ability of reading comprehension, the ability of building problem solving model, the ability of answering and expressing and the ability of evaluating and reflecting are declining in turn, and these elements are adjacent correlated.(2) There exist some problems of the junior middle school students in the problem solving elements.
