In Chinese vast land, there live 56 ethnic groups, including Han and 55 relatively small number of ethnic minorities. They work and live in this land, creating five thousand years’ long history and unique culture of China. Unique and mysterious, traditional ethnic minority culture has aroused great interest among scholars and experts. Generally speaking, traditional ethnic minority cultures include dress culture, food culture, architecture culture, art culture, sacrifice culture, entertainment culture and sports culture. Traditional ethnic minority sport, which is closely related to production mode and lifestyle, is an important part of traditional ethnic culture and a major way to inherit traditional ethnic culture. In 2001, china successfully entered WTO. With the rapid development of transportation, information, economy and market, the earth has become a “global village”. However, globalization is a double-edged sword which brings both challenges and new opportunities. On one hand, it promotes the development of China’s politics, economy, culture, society and education and accelerates China’s integration into the modern world. On the other hand, the pursuit of economic development and fashion has posed threat to China’s traditional culture. With western culture flooding into minority areas, some ethnic minority compatriots are attracted by and blindly worship newly sprouted things, leading to the loss of traditional culture. At the same time, the government has focused on social transformation and the development of urbanization, while it ignores the historical, geographical and cultural particularity in ethnic minority areas. As a result, the culture, customs and habits in ethnic minority areas has become more and more sinicized. The cultural connotations and spiritual cores of ethnic minorities are gradually lost, which is not conducive to carry forward the ethnic culture.Based on the current situation of ethnic minority sports of Yi People, the present paper adopted the methods of documentary, field investigation, used questionnaires, interviews, statistics and employed sociology, ethnology and sports science to analyze the development of ethnic minority sports in Yanyuan and Butuo County of Liangshan Prefecture in Sichuan, in order to find a better path for the future development of traditional sports for Yi People. The first part clarifies the rationale, significance, research method and research object of the present study. By reviewing related literature, this part also defines such notions as production mode, lifestyle and traditional ethnic minority sports. The second part briefly introduces the general situation of Yanyuan and Butuo County and analyzes the development of traditional ethnic sports in the two counties. These general situations include recently hosted traditional sports and major events. Moreover, the reason why people choose to take part in sports, their attitude towards traditional sports, and factors that impede the development of traditional sports are analyzed.Based on previous research, the third part first clarifies the close relation between production mode and traditional ethnic minority sports and describes the changes in production mode and lifestyle of Yi people. Besides, the paper further analyzes the underlying reasons for the changes in people’s production mode.Under the current situation of globalization and urban-rural integration, the development and inheritance of traditional sports face great difficulties. With the change of production mode and the aging of population, traditional sports now have lost its foundation and cultural connotations, and are in great need of inheritors. At the same time, with the rapid development of economy and scientific technology, changes in people’s thoughts have brought new opportunities for the inheritance of traditional sports.Based on the discussions above, the last part draws the conclusion that changes in production mode and lifestyle influence the development of traditional sports of Yi People. At present, traditional sports are in great danger in that it faces challenges at both home and abroad. On one hand, traditional culture has lost cultural connotation and is in great need of inheritors; on the other hand, traditional culture faces the invasion of Han culture and western culture. Based on the development of traditional ethnic sports in Yanyuan and Butuo County, this paper puts forward the countermeasures for the future innovative development of traditional sports of Yi People.
