With the development of information and economy of China, the opening process is accelerating. Hence, it’s a new necessary quality for Chinese to master a foreign language. As the basis of English teaching, the high school English teaching will play a much more important role in cultivating talents who suits the new condition of this country. Meanwhile, teachers should also take measures to improve the teaching methods and skills such as enrich the content, activities and efficiency. So in this thesis, the author tried to discuss the use of authentic video materials in the teaching process, with the hope to provide a new perspective of English teaching in high school.At the beginning, the author briefly states the importance of using authentic video materials in classroom. Authentic video materials are significant in improving the four basic skills in English, which are listening, speaking, reading and writing, and meaningful in the culture education and daily application of English.Using authentic video materials in the teaching process is the sign of modernization in education. Its advantages are following:1. it reflects the dominance of teacher and the subjectivity of students; 2. it reflects the authenticity and interactivity of English language; 3. while teaching language skills, students can also learn the culture and communication of different foreign countries.By collecting and analyzing the data of test results, the author found that as the carrier of language, authentic video materials can do a much better job in arousing learning interest and improving language proficiency than the traditional teaching methods used before. On the other hand, there is one more superiority of using authentic video materials, which is its authenticity. The language in video materials comes from the real life or at least is more close to the actual use of English. After experiencing the new teaching method, students know much more about the pronunciation and intonation, and learn something more about the foreign culture.Starting from his own teaching practice, the author tries to discuss the using principles and characteristics of different authentic video materials, hoping to improve student’s comprehension on the new words, sentences and strengthen their ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. After the experimental teaching and exam, students who took part in the experiment though high of this new teach method. The conclusion of this thesis also provides the theoretical and practical evidence which shows that the proper use of authentic video materials can arouse students’ learning interest and improve their English proficiency. In the end, the author shared his suggestion on how to use authentic video materials and expect more researches will be done in the future.
