In recent years, featured secondary music schools or featured music classes emerged in many parts of China. This is a new school-running mode reflecting the characteristics of the social, economic and educational reform and profound changes with the reform and opening up. Since the 1950’s, China’s secondary music education has been divided into two categories:the music education in general secondary schools and the professional music education (usually refers to the secondary schools affiliated to conservatories of music). With the emergence of the "featured secondary music education", the secondary music education in China has seen a new picture of the co-prosperity of "general", "featured" and "professional". The establishment of the featured secondary music school definitely plays a significant role in popularizing music education, improving the quality of talents and meeting the demand of the society; meanwhile, it also changes the pattern of China’s secondary music education. However, in general, "featured music secondary education" is still in the stage of practice and exploration. What is the effect of its teaching? What are its successes and problems, its educational goals, school-running philosophy and school system like? All these need to be summarized and researched in time.Based on the examples of the featured secondary music education such as "music class" of the Changsha No.11 High School and the "art class" of Mingde Middle School, this essay focuses on their exploration and development to compare their different modes and types, discussing the important role of music education management; meanwhile, it also compares "music class" with professional secondary music education in order to analyze the significance of the existence of "music class" and the prospect of its development. On this basis, it further demonstrates the development and importance of the multi-dimensions and various types of the overall structure of China’s secondary music education nowadays.
