With the socioeconomic development in China, the state puts forward new requirements in training talents. As high school year is the golden period of youth development, the implementation of quality oriented education and curriculum reform should be paid more attention to. Learning motivation is one of the most important factors in influencing learners’ learning result, studying various factors in affecting foreign language learning motivation is of great significance to promote teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. This research investigates the characteristics of students’ foreign language learning motivation in Guang Rao Number one Middle School of Shandong province, and provides useful implications for teachers taking rational methods to stimulate students learning motivation and promote English teaching.Based on the above mentioned purpose, the research focuses on three questions:(1) What are the overall characteristics of senior one students’ English learning motivation ? What’s the difference in learning motivation between different groups of students?(2) What’s the main factors affecting high school students’ foreign language learning motivation?(3) How should teachers use reasonable strategies to stimulate students learning motivation, and promote English teaching? To answer the three questions, the research investigates the factors in affecting students’ foreign language learning motivation through questionnaire investigation, interview method and classroom observation and come to the following conclusion.Firstly, there are six factors influencing high school students’ learning motivation, including learning interest, achievement, future development, responsibility, learning situation( teacher and course) and going abroad. Of all the factors, their achievement motivation is the most prominent, learning situation( teacher and course) and interest also have great influence too. Furthermore, students of the high grade group and of low grade also have great difference in the learning motivation factors. High grade students’ learning interest motivation or internal motivation is the strongest while low grade students are affected mostly by the learning situation,achievement or the external motivations. As for these students, teacher and course have great influence on them. Combined with the interview record, the author indicates that there are three factors affecting students learning motivation, including learning situations, learners themselves and other aspects. Finally, the author put forward that teachers should lessen the score influence and take some effective strategies, such as establishing a good relationship with students, creating a good classroom atmosphere, reducing students’ language anxiety to stimulate the students’ learning motivation and cultivate students’ intrinsic learning interest, so as to promote English teaching.
