This research is a case study of rituals in daily school life at H school in Shanghai which makes the inspection about conception of rituals and etymology study a starting point and makes the typical daily school rituals a carrier to study the possible features and functions of rituals in daily school life. The main aim of this research is to explore and reveal how rituals work in daily school life. That is to say what is the operation mechanism of rituals in daily school life. This research is mainly based on fieldwork and employ narrative writing pattern to provide a overall situation of rituals in daily school life. In this thesis, we draw the following conclusions:Conclusion 1:ritual is a way of existence and human beings is ritual existence. Ritual is a way of existence, but not the only way of existence. As an essential part of schooling, school rituals is an important component in the construction of school culture and provides an important platform for the interaction between teachers and students or among students. People of school is in rituals in daily school life and is existence of ritual and their life is developed and enriched in ritual interactions. Nevertheless, human beings is ritual existence dose not means it exclude other existent properties.Conclusion 2:the uniqueness of ritual in daily school life lies in the objects of education. Like religious rituals and other ceremonies in the secular society, school rituals must take on certain social functions and responsibilities, such as the socialization of ritual participants, the reconstruction of social ideology and system, social and cultural transmission, update and reconstruction. However, there are essential difference between school rituals and religious rituals and other rituals in secular society which comes from particularity of ritual participants. Ritual in daily school life is periodic, repetitive, structured or semi-structured and public or semi-public in a large extent. It not only take on certain social function and responsibilities but also promote the healthy and initiative development of students’ and teachers’ life.Conclusion 3:analysis about operation mechanism of school rituals. This article attempts to make common symbol system and cultural patterns as a starting point to reveal the operational mechanism of rituals from the perspective of emotional joint and common sense. Emotional joint and common sense are double basis of the realization of the function of school rituals in daily life which motivate the real participation of participants and promote the development and continuation of individual life and group life of participants and enhance the socialization and collective identity of individuals.
