Listening teaching has always played an important role in English teaching in the middle school because the acquisition of languages is closely related to the environment. Language learners can be exposed to the second language environment through listening. The study shows that for the second language learning beginners, it is more effective to promote language learners’ skills by listening than by speaking. As a result, the development of listening skills contributes greatly to the development of speaking, reading and writing. On the basis of literature, this research first explores theoretical bases of Krashen’s input hypothesis and multimodality for improving English listening instruction. Secondly, this research investigates and analyzes the current English listening situation of middle school students and the reasons behind the current situation by using the questionnaire and survey. Finally, on the basis of the theoretical and empirical researches, this research expounds the concrete suggestions on middle school English listening instruction and provides examples and cases of Wechat subscription as well as the practical strategies for improving listening skills. The findings of the empirical research mainly reveal students’ motivations for English listening, students’ listening habits, students’ knowledge of listening techniques and students’ main difficulties in English listening and the reasons behind the phenomena. On the basis of the findings and the theories, this research puts forward the following practical suggestions for improving listening instruction in middle school:(1) teachers should provide real context to students through mini- videos;(2) teachers should classify the mini- videos with its context and topics;(3) teachers should try to provide students with effective listening input through Wechat subscription on daily basis;(4) teachers should help students’ improve listening comprehension by designing background information, vocabulary list and exercises for the mini- videos;(5) teachers should maximize students’ potential by brainstorming in pre- listening and post-listening phase.
