As we know, English composition plays a very important role in the examination. It can reflect the students’ application ability in English. National Ministry of Education promulgated "The Ordinary High School English Curriculum Standard", which clearly put forward the requirements for students’ writing ability:they can write a composition which has coherent semantics and a complete structure, and at the same time, the genre must be normative and the sentence must be fluent. However, in the actual teaching process, many teachers pay more attention to vocabulary and grammar, ignoring the genre, and students cannot grasp the writing task from a macro point of view. A composition is just a simple list of vocabulary, sentences, but it is empty in content. So based on the analysis of the average in College Entrance Examination English, and students’ low points in English composition, we mainly explore its side effect on English points, and how to improve students’ ability to write an English composition.In systemic functional linguistics, generic structure potential, which is actually the possibility of a certain genre in its meaning structure, is one of the focus of generic study. The same genre has the same generic structure potential. Actually, for College Entrance Examination English composition, the genre of an English composition is very typical each year, such as arguments, letters, etc.. This essay is based on generic structure potential to analyze English writing to train students from the external environment of a composition and analyze it, and in this way can they learn to recognize different genres according to the generic structure potential.This essay first introduces background and literature review at home and abroad. Then it states theoretical basis which is called the generic structure potential theory. Then, it analyzes the application of the generic structure potential in Senior Middle School English writing. Through the contrast and teaching experiment, finally it draws a conclusion:compared with the traditional teaching modes of writing, the teacher can apply the generic structure potential theory to guide the teaching of English writing to make students know genres and improve students’ English writing ability effectively.
