Homework plays an important role in the teaching and learning. Homework can not only help teachers understand the effect of classroom teaching, but also help teachers adjust the teaching methods, improve teaching effect, and ultimately achieve to improve students’ achievement and develop the students’ ability to use English. However, in some areas, the problems of English homework design and arrangement have not been affected, even though we have been advocating the education reform and quality education.This article is based on other research at home and abroad, more than 200 teachers and students from Baishui County Xinhua Middle School and Chengguan Middle School are investigated by questionnaire, so the author can understand the current situation of homework time, types, sources, correcting and the strategy using of students’ learning, at last, the author put forward the problems and advice of the students’ English homework by questionnaire and interviewing teachers and students.Then the author test two parallel classes from Xinhua Middle School in 2 months, one class maintains the original homework arrangement while the homework of experimental class comes from the new design of the author and their teacher, after 2months, the learning result of this two classes are compared to verify which kind of homework can improve students’ English achievement and promote the students’ development.The questionnaire shows that the homework time in this two school is too long,causing a lot of pressure to the students. In homework designing, homework arrangement is basically completed by teachers ignoring the importance of students’ participation. And the homework is basically the same ignoring the individual difference of students. In homework sources, most of the homework come from thetextbooks and workbooks, too much emphasis on the written homework and the form is single, so it is difficult to attract students’ interest in finishing English homework.In the homework types, the main types are coping, reciting the passage and paper exercises, ignoring the importance of students’ listening practice, cooperative work and innovative work. After that, the author puts forward some advice to reform the English homework and assigns new homework, and effectively verifies that carefully arranged homework plays an important role in improving students’ achievement and students’ ability to use English and in promoting the development of students. But in the implementation process, due to the limitation of sample size, the author’s limited academic research ability and teaching experience, it is hard to comprehensively analyze and investigate the date of the questionnaire and the test, therefore, inevitably causing some errors in experimental results.
