With the fierce development of economic globalization and our deep concern of the human common interests, the influence of the universal value trend of thought began to boom seriously in China, and also brought a serious impact on the ideological and political education in universities.Freedom, equality, philanthropy, humanity, nomocracy, democracy, separation of power system and multi-part system as well as free-market model, these concepts in western traditional polity, economy, culture, society and other fields are regarded as the criterion, the highest value norm and rule that we should all believe in and obey by the universal value trend of thought. It is trying to promote them worldwide and incorporate other non-western values into the mainstream values of the West.Universal value trend of thought, as a strong political trend of thought, although can cultivate students’ sense of freedom and equality, sense of legal system, humanistic feelings and opening spirit, it still does serious damage to our college students in some aspects. In the aspect of value, it will cause the blind worship of capitalism and suspicion of socialist system among college students. In the aspect of culture, it will lead to western cultural centralism and nation cultural nihilism which can mislead college students to the socialist direction of China’s reform and opening up. In the aspect of economy, it will bring about the idea of socialist privatization and dispel the collectivism values of our country even the belief of college students on Marx and communism.Facing the impact of universal trend of thought, college ideological and political education should respond to it proactively from multiple perspectives. Firstly, universities should strengthen the construction of the ideological and political education theory course faculty. Teachers should have firm political beliefs and strong political consciousness, build a solid theoretical foundation, and cultivate students’ ability of analysing the universal trend of thought. They should also explore the teaching methods by combining with the social trend of thought to improve the effectiveness of college ideological and political theory, establish the sense of responsibility and crisis, and develop their sense of mission.Secondly, they should reveal the fallacy of the universal trend of thought and its harm to practice. Theoretically, college ideological and political education should use the historical materialism to criticize the historical idealism of the universal trend of thought, which is based on the theory of abstract humanization.
