In the modern foreign language teaching, it has been a focus of much concern to help students develop a favorable reading ability. This thesis aims to discuss how to effectively improve students’ reading comprehension under an extracurricular reading model—Language Sense-oriented Reading.Language Sense-oriented Reading, firstly proposed by Han Baocheng and Huo Qingwen in 2007, is not only a reading mode but also a learning concept which advocates exposing students to native learners’ reading materials through wide reading. In the background of EFLT in China, it means to read authentic English literature works to help learners form the sense of language in a more natural way. It is supposed that students’ reading comprehension and interests would be improved as their accumulation of background knowledge being enlarged. However, there are few studies about Language Sense-oriented Reading so far. And there is a blank to conduct empirical experiment for extracurricular reading.Enlightened by both the previous researches and relevant reading theories, in the present study, an empirical study was carried out in two innate classes with the senior one students in No.2 Middle School of Shahe. The experiment lasted 12 weeks. Before the experiment, a questionnaire was used to survey the situation of students’ extracurricular reading. Test and interview were performed in this study to evaluate the effect of Language Sense-oriented Reading in terms of reading comprehension proficiency and attitudes towards this autonomous reading outside class.Data analysis was performed through SPSS 13.0, which demonstrated that Language Sense-oriented Reading had a certain effect on students’ reading habits and attitudes. Concretely, the students in the experimental class(1) had a better awareness of the necessity and importance of reading;(2) invested more time in extracurricular reading and showed greater interests in reading;(3) recognized and developed a certain useful reading skills, like grasping key words and making notes and so on.Some enlightenment can be drawn from the results of the experiment. Firstly,Language Sense-oriented Reading is a great generalized model in reading instructionof English learning and teaching; students are encouraged to obtain as much relevant information as they can within authentic reading materials to develop language sense in reading comprehension. It’s crucial to cultivate good reading habits for stimulating students’ reading interests and developing reading skills.
