Collision And Fusion Of Sino-american Family Education

Family education, school education and social education are three organic parts of education. As the foundation and starting point of child education, family education plays a significant role in children’s growth. Although enormous achievements in economy and the implementation of “one-child-only” policy delight us greatly, more and more family education problems appear in our country that worry parents badly. Successful parents cannot rear promising children. Instances of “black sheep” due to failure of family education can be often read in newspapers and magazines, etc., which make Chinese scholars of education to study the advanced western countries in this regard. Especially, comparative studies on Chinese and American family education become more and more appealing to researchers. But most studies are conducted from the perspectives of economy, politics, history and religion.The present study is conducted from the perspective of culture with Hofstede’s culture dimensions as its theoretical underpinning. The typical cases related to “tiger mother” and “cat father” phenomena are the study objects. The main method is case studies. The thesis will adopt individualism-collectivism, uncertainty avoidance and power distance to analyze the differences between Chinese and American family education on their concept, content and method.After in-depth analysis of cases, the findings are that the collision and fusion of Sino-American family education are mainly reflected in the aspects of concepts, contents and methods: individualism-collectivism affects family education concepts, uncertainty avoidance influences family education contents and power distance affects family education methods.
