A Study On The General Education Of Brown University

As a sharp increase in knowledge and rapid development in information process of today’s society, the basic knowledge is relatively stable. Moreover, the general education is the greatest guardian in the field of basics. Meanwhile, general education has become an important way to cultivate talents in colleges and universities. Brown University in the United States, as one of the best research universities in the world, has been holding high the banner of undergraduate education, focusing on general education, implementing the approach of free elective course, which is unique in the whole nation.This thesis studies free elective general education of Brown University. First, the article defines the the concept of general education, etc. From the perspective of the university educational view on general education, the analytic frame of this paper is proposed, including the history and development of general education in Brown University; the goal system of general education, the curriculum design of general education, the quality assurance system of general education, etc. All the detailed analysis is to unfold the uniqueness of Brown University’s general education. This paper deeply analyses the successful elements of general education, that is, the formation of a unified chain of resources, teaching, curriculum, advising, management, and evaluation will provide the united force for the implementation of general education.For the principles of openness, autonomy, and freedom, general education has become a major feature of undergraduate education in Brown University, which is welcomed by the majority of teachers and students who are from home and abroad. By the systematic research on free elective general education of Brown University, the expectation of this article is to provide some references for the exploration of theory and practice of general education in Chinese universities.
