Reading comprehension is an important part and focus of high school English teaching, and reflects the students’ comprehensive language ability. One of the cores of high school English teaching is to cultivate the students’ reading ability. But in the long-term teaching process, teachers adopt the traditional teaching modes to train the students, which to certain extent hinders the development of their reading ability. The traditional teaching method has not been adapted to the new standard curriculum requirements for English reading. Therefore, based on the analysis of high school students with reading comprehension difficulties, guided by the cultural schema theory, this thesis aims at developing a new reading method which integrates the cultural schema with reading comprehension. Research is done in the following aspects:introduce several methods of the construction of cultural schema; train the students with the integration of cultural schema and reading comprehension, so as to enhance their interest and reading ability; speculate and verify the experimental hypothesis according to the results of the questionnaire survey of the teachers and students’ reading tests, and analyze the results of the experiment; and finally discuss the teachers’ problems in the implementation of the integration of cultural schema and reading comprehension and suggest some possible solutions.This thesis begins with the introduction of research background at home and abroad, and presents the research purpose. Secondly, it gives an overview of the cultural schema theory, and the relationship between cultural schema and reading comprehension. Cultural schema, as a branch of the schema theory, is a relatively new theory, and has the input and output theory as its theoretical basis. The predecessors’ research on its application in teaching reading comprehension has achieved certain success, but there are still some limitations. And then, it introduces the method of the integration of cultural schema and reading comprehension (self-accumulation method, comparison between English and Chinese, personal experience exchange method, discussion method, direct interpretation and paraphrase), and discusses the application of cultural schema in reading comprehension. On this basis comes the discussion of the two levels of cultural schema and reading comprehension. Finally, according to the results of the questionnaire of the teachers and students’ reading tests, the writer designed the experiment, tested the students of two classes, and analyzes and discusses the experimental results.Study shows that the English teachers’ sense of intercultural communication needs to be improved, and their cultural awareness is relatively weak and far from meeting the requirement for high school English teachers. As for students, they should learn to integrate culture with language learning while doing the reading comprehension exercises, which will help them revive the old schema and construct new ones. Finally the reading materials should be selected according to their difficulty levels and interestingness. And the teacher should change the evaluation method to avoid cramming teaching, and develop the students’ autonomous learning ability. The teachers should be keen on learning, adopt new theories and develop new curriculum resources, so as to enhance the efficiency of the integration of cultural schema with English reading comprehension.
