Study On The Changes Of Lingling Town

Located in the central north of Yongzhou City of Hunan Province, Lingling District is one of the oldest districts in Hunan Province. Lingling once was so poor due to its remoteness location that ancient officials usually exile to here. After the founding of New C hina, the population of Lingling Town meets a huge increasing, economy developing rapidly, and gradually got rid of the poor situation. Since C hina ’s reform and opening up, Lingling Town got great development, but also exposed many shortcomings. Based on above mentioned, this thesis shall study on transition of Lingling Town. O n one hand, sort out the developing track of the town can deepen our comprehensive understanding of Lingling Town; on the other hand, summarize out experience and lessons of Lingling Town can provide reference for its future development.Lingling District was formerly known as the Quanling Marquisate of Western Han Dynasty; it changed to Quanling County in Eastern Han Dynasty; in Sui Dynasty, it was called Lingling County; again in 1995, it changed to Zhishan District; finally in 2005, it named Lingling District. The superior geographical location and the early agricultural development of Lingling District provided requisites for Lingling Town’s foundation. At first, Lingling Town’s urban areas were small and there was no outer city walls, specific circumstances were unverifiability. In Song Dynasty, Lingling Town extended inner city wall and outer city walls, and the walls which made of loess were reconstructed to stones and bricks, urban areas began to take shape. In Ming and Qing Dynasty, Lingling Town has undergone multiple times of damages, reconstruction and extensions, the type and the number of the building increased gradually, and the scale of the urban areas expanded by and by. In the early Republic of C hina, the spatial form of Lingling Town was almost retained like late Q ing Dynasty; later on, the town has been ruined by soldiers and brigands. Lingling Town’s spatial form changed a lot, and the economy, education level and population were also evolved. The economy of Lingling Town develops tortuously. In Tang Dynasty, Lingling Town has already been a famous handicraft industry city. Due to lack of development power, its growth drop behind other regions. In Ming Dynasty, Q ing Dynasty and the Republic of C hina, the population of Lingling Town keeps increasing. Lingling Town’s culture reached its peak in Tang and Song Dynasties. Although imperial examination achievement was not as good as Song Dynasty, but the academies and schools constant renovated and expanded in Ming Dynasty and Q ing Dynasties, they trained a lot of talents for Lingling.After the founding of new C hina, as a result of the need of town construction, almost all the town wall has been demolished, and lots of old buildings have been rebuilt. Now days, the construction of Lingling Town is still on progress, streets and buildings are changing with each passing day, urban area spreads in all directions constantly. With the development of the society, urban construction ideas of Lingling people have changed. People not o nly want the pull effect on economic growth of urban construction, but also concern about promoting cultural taste of the town itself. And the government is working hard on creating a “brand-new ancient town”. In this case, problems which emerge in the pro cess of urbanization must be solved, the coordination between the new town construction and old town protection must be ensured, and the tourism resources within the territory must exploited scientifically, so that the economy and culture of Lingling Town could develop better in the future.
