Embodied in the art of film and television culture,film-television culture is both a culture of film and television in terms of their production and circulation and one of the most widely-spread cultural entities in the contemporary society, with a most influential power and a largest audience. Based on one’s own moral needs and regulated by certain social ethics and moral principles, moral emotions are morally emotional experiences being aroused while one is evaluating the moral behaviors of his own or others’ and turn his moral understandings into moral believes and behaviors. The contemporary university students grow up right in an environment of such a film-television culture, and the formation and development of their moral emotions are inevitably affected by what surrounds them. Film-television culture supposedly exerts both a positive impact and a negative influence upon university students’ moral emotions, adding to their moral experiences of rich emotions in the colorful world of film and television and suppressing their development of moral emotions to some extent. Due to the harmful influences by the film-television culture, university students’ moral emotions reveal some problems and traits which hinder on the sound development of their moral emotions and deserve serious considerations. The existence of strong effects by moral emotions makes it necessary for us both to avoid their harmfulness and to seek their benefits. To this purpose, the present research serves, theoretically and practically, as a theoretical framework and a supportive illustration for universities to develop their students’ moral emotions by a proper and successful use of film-television culture.This thesis is divided into five parts. The first is the introduction, expounding the reason and significance of this research, the current academic research related to the topic, the research ideas and the research methods. The second is the summary of the film-television culture and the moral emotions, defining film-television culture, elaborating on its characteristics and functions, and looking into the meaning, structure and functions of moral emotions. Based on these efforts, this second part goes on discussing the relationship between the film-television culture and moral emotions. The third part analyzes the positive and negative influences of film-television culture on moral emotions of university students. The positive influences are: As an effective carrier of moral emotions, the film-television culture enriches one’s experiences of moral emotions, contributing to the forming of a moral emotions-rich media environment; whereas the negative influences: It inhibits the development of university students’ moral emotions, draining the positive moral emotions felt and maintained by the students, and weakening their ability to regulate their moral emotions. The fourth part presents a questionnaire by the author about the status quo of university students’ moral emotions. Based on the questionnaire and its analysis, this part not only reveals problems of students’ moral emotions in light of the film-television culture and points out several low experience degrees moral emotion factors, but also arrives at possible causes of this the status quo by examining such decisive factors as school teaching effects, government supervision responsibilities, film-television culture influences and students’ personality development. The fifth part puts forward suggestions about cultivating the moral emotions of university students by making positive use of the film-television culture. With a focus on the guiding principles, the cultivating contents, the working approaches and the possible measures, this part attempts at ways to prevent students from being negatively influenced by the film-television culture, to cultivate students’ moral emotions with the help of the film-television culture. This part also discusses ways to bring the government supervision, the film-television culture and students’ subjective initiatives into a full play in their uses in cultivating students’ moral emotions.
