The New Culture Movement opened up a new era for China’s politics and culture.The study on the New Youth, a classic work, which can best represent China’s new culture,has been paid much attention to since the Republic of China. Therefore, there’ve beenmany researches on the classic, which reflected the thoughts of many great educators, butfew of the researches can systematically focus on the magazine from the angle of education.This thesis, by exploring the relationship between the New Youth and modern educationalthoughts as well as modern educational practice, tries to broaden the studying field of theNew Youth, enrich the connotations of the New Culture Movement, excite the atmosphereof the history class and look back to the beliefs of the educators of the Republic of Chinaso as to improve the current educational reform.Analyzing some historical documents as well as combining Chen Duxiu’s life experienceand the historical background of the early Republic of China, the author analyzed thereason why the Youth was so popular around the world while at the beginning it was a onlyan obscure magazine.The author has carefully studied the nine volumes of the New Youth, including someimportant educational essays written be Chen Duxiu and Cai Yuanpei as well as some othercolumns like Readers’ Forum, Events In and Abroad, Communication and Brief GroupRules to search for enough historical resources about education and summarize thehistorical track of several educational thoughts, which gradually faded. In the third part, theauthor, from the aspect of educational policies and educational contents, deals with therelationship between moral education, intellectual education, physical education, aestheticeducation and health education in the New Youth; Facing different people, the scholars ofthe Republic of China recommended that the education of the youth should be focused andmeanwhile the education of females, children and workers should also be paid attention to.During the time, faced with various educational thoughts and experiments, people alsocritically reflected on the results of education and persisted in searching for perfecteducation patterns. Especially in the late New Culture Movement, with the spread of Marxism in China, the education of socialism came into existence in the New Youth.Therefore, the New Youth fully reflected the basic condition of education in theRepublic of China, led the direction of education in the Republic of China, and showed thethoughts and practical spirit of modern educational masters. The New Youth isundoubtedly one of the greatest magazines of the20st century.
