Since the 21 st century, the biological sciences have also made many unprecedented major breakthrough and important achievements with the rapid development of natural science. So improving the biological science literacy of each citizen is imperative. At the same time, under the background of new curriculum reform, the middle school biology curriculum standard has tried to change the student’s study ways, encourage students actively participate in the learning process, aims to train middle school students’ autonomous learning ability. Among them, the biology study motivation is the internal power in happening and maintain of learning behaviors. It affects the students’ learning efficiency and sustainability.In addition, Henan has many rural people as an education province; the implementation of the new curriculum reform has been for seven years. So its education problems are very important. And biology is one of the required basic subjects for middle school students in Henan province. So it is necessary to understand the status and influencing factors of biology study motivation. On the basis of this, we put forward the concrete strategy of inspiring and cultivating the biology study motivation in order to optimize students’ study motivation.In this paper, based on the rural middle school students in Henan province, according to the theory of hierarchy of needs and attribution theory, the author used the methods of literature analysis, questionnaire survey and interview method to research present situation and influence factors of biology study motivation. Ten middle schools were selected from different regions of Henan province rural. And two classes were randomly selected from grade seven and eight of junior middle school and all grades of high school, and then the questionnaires were distributed. Finally 2346 valid questionnaires were collected, and then we choose 20 individual interviews of different motivation levels students form the samples. The results and data of the survey were processed and analyzed by SPSS20.0 simplified Chinese and EXCEL software. The conclusions are as follows:Under the background of new curriculum reform, the strength of biology study motivation of rural middle school students in Henan overall is general. Internal motivation is significantly higher than external motivation. Among them, the intensity of internal motivation is significantly higher than extrinsic motivation of students in the junior high school, and there is no significant difference among internal motivation and external motivation in high school students.No significant differences of middle school students’ biology study motivation between learning periods and genders. The strength of biology study motivation of junior high school students is higher than the senior high school students on internal motivation, but the difference is not significant; external motivation of the junior high school students is lower than the senior high school students, and the difference is significant. The differences of internal and external motivation are not significant on genders.With the increase of the grade, biology study motivation of rural middle school students in Henan province increased after decreased. Internal motivation tends to decrease then leveled off, but external motivation level increased.In the each dimension of influence factors, the average scores of teacher-student relationship and biology teachers are higher. The average scores of hierarchy of needs, values, parents support, attribution ways and the biology study ethos are lower. The average score of junior high school students in the security section is significantly lower than the senior high school students, but no significant difference was found in other needs.On the each dimension of influence factors, the average scores of students’ parents support and biology study ethos in junior high school students are significantly lower than the high school students; no significant difference was found in other dimensions.According to the above findings, the author made the following suggestions for the rural middle school biology teaching in Henan Province: focusing on the internalization of external motivation of senior high school students; strengthen the convergence of biology teaching between junior and senior high school; building the biology study community; raising the awareness of parents in the middle school students’ biology study and promoting the construction of rural middle school biology learning ethos. These intended to optimize the biology study motivation, improve the efficiency of biology study, so as to promote the pace of the quality education reform.
