Extracurricular reading, a significant part to Chinese curriculum, plays an important role to improve the students’ Chinese learning standard. The publishing of <Chinese Curriculum Standards of Compulsory Education>(the 2011 edition) provides new ideas and guidance to Chinese teaching in the phrase of compulsory education. Under the certain standards, not only the amount of extracurricular reading has been set specifically, but the importance has been attached to cultivate students’ interest in reading, encourage them to read more and varied books as well as improve their reading taste. Students should be encouraged to read more and great books instead of doing exercises again and again. As a process of getting information from the written materials, reading has been incentivized, sustained and guided by the reading motivation which can encourage students to read, exert some influence on reading quality and is significant to the whole reading process. In order to better research on the extracurricular reading motivation, the author observed some phenomenon and did some relevant questionnaire survey, thus getting the conclusion that extracurricular reading motivation for junior high school students became declined as they were getting older. The reading motivation has been influenced by the pressure on senior high school entrance examination, the students’ physical and psychological developments, the surroundings as well as their teachers. Students became more utilitarian in their reading and attached so much importance on their grades that their sensation for the beauty and value of the books has been lost. The junior high school students, lack of discrimination and willpower, are confused to plenty of books appeared in their lives with the social economic development and the scientific development. Aimed to solve this problem, this thesis proposes some solution from the viewpoint of cultivating students’ motivation for extracurricular reading. The research of this thesis is based on the relevant theory on how to cultivate extracurricular reading motivation and followed by the principle that theory guides practice. First, incentivize students’ reading motivation by creating better conditions for learning and improving teachers’ quality. Second, teachers need to help student understand the objectives and values for reading, in the process of reading, recommend book reading list, guide the students in a scientific way as well as cultivate their good reading habit so that the students’ reading motivation can be strengthened. Last, through getting students involved in reading and optimizing comment system so that the students can feel success, we can mobilize their enthusiasm and interest in reading and finally turn external motivation into the internal motivation. May these suggestions can have a slightest contribution to improve extracurricular reading of junior high school students, incentivize their reading motivation and make their mind enriched by reading.
