For a long time, under the exam—oriented education,the school running mode leads to “thousands of schools don’t’ look different” and the mode of cultivating talents leads to “tens of thousands of students have the same looks” gradually develop, especially in the environment of the popular trend of high school education, both of the modes neglect the development of student’s individuality and ability and regard passing the entrance exam as the only goal, which don’t adapt to the social demand for education and adapt to the social demands. Therefore, the National Medium and Long—term Educational Reform and Development Program encourages the ordinary high schools to have their own characteristics in running school, especially under the current background of popularizing the high school education, the ordinary high school must on the way of their own running characteristics, so they will have a foothold space and get a better development space.This paper uses the method of literature to understand the dynamic characteristics of ordinary high school studies both at home and abroad; the method of case research, taking the running characteristics of the High School Attached to Hunan Normal University as an example and through the ways of material consulting, informal interviewing and experience summarizing to fully understand the hardships when the school explores its running characteristics; the method of SWOT analysis to dissect the school, extract features and reveal the rule of school— running characteristics. According to the foundation of the High School Attached to Hunan Normal University and its analysis of developed strategy show that the distinct advantage is the basis of creating school’s characteristics, which includes: the well—known school brand, the distinct courses, the capable management team, the natural colleges and universities resources and the social support. According to seize the good opportunity of the internationalized education and the national basic education reform to further broaden the characteristic development space, create and deepen the characteristics of ordinary high school comprehensively. We must have a vivid view of the relation between the popularized education and specialized education and then understand the foundation of school characteristics is a long—term development process from specialty,feature to characteristics. We should be based on the school’s reality, through the headmaster’s leading; the teachers’ participating, and respect the school’s history and then further deepen its characteristics. Therefore, the comprehensive quality of teachers and students in the ordinary high school can get a effective improvement, the quality of students can be developed all—around, the school onto the road of sustainable development and can get the broad support and recognition of the whole society.
