Multimedia computer technology is widely used in various fields. When facing to strong impact of the rapid development of science and technology in the information society, physical education, as an important part of the nation’s undertakings, should follow the trend of the era. We need to draw support from high technologies and means, and to make full use of all information resources to support the physical education, so as to promote the reform of colleges’ teaching approaches.Physical education teaching technology mainly follows the order of demonstration——practice. In 1995, the State Education Commission launched the <Higher Education Facing the 21st Century Teaching Contents and Curriculum System Reform Plan> and put forward to go on the reform in the " modern" way. Since then, many sports events have started to apply multimedia-teaching methods in physical education.At the scene of the first Chinese college students swimming coaches training class, people made a preliminary survey for multimedia swimming teaching. The results show that:the current multimedia applications are mostly used in the theoretical teaching and usually used as the demonstration courseware. People haven’t found any applications of the combination of the multimedia demos and independent learning courseware.Taking breaststroke technique teaching as an example, we design two sets of multimedia CAI courseware (a demonstration courseware, a combination of demos and independent learning courseware), and experiment them respectively. After experts’evaluation, I reviewed the experimental observation process and analysis the results in order to get further generalizations. It is concluded that the two kinds of breaststroke teaching of multimedia CAI courseware are in line with the features of scientific, educational, design characteristics and the multimedia interaction. Breaststroke multimedia CAI teaching combination of demos and independent learning courseware along with the multimedia CAI teaching demos courseware has the same design process, hardware production environment and teaching designs. They also choose the same script and the material in processing. The two types of coursewares have different software environment and synthesis. Their applications in skills assessment and theoretical results have significant differences. There is no dramatic difference in breaststroke standard grades.In the media interaction, multimedia CAI teaching combination of demos and independent learning courseware is more reasonable and flexible in feedback (graphics, text, voice) and processing. The multimedia CAI teaching demos courseware performs better in using of video images.The multimedia CAI teaching combination of demos and independent learning courseware has no application in physical education teaching. This courseware is easy to handle and has the feature of self-directed learning. In the question and answer session, it provides plenty of time for students to think about which can arouse their interest. The multimedia CAI teaching demos courseware is widely applied in the sports teaching. However, the courseware teachers, as the leading roles in the process, can not perfectly arouse students’ interest because it is difficult to control the time in the question and answer session.The author thinks that the advantages of two kinds of courseware are different. Teachers can choose appropriate multimedia teaching type according to the course objectives.
