| Student-based Education, which was put forward by Prof. Guo Sile, is not just an approach, but an idea for education. It is designed to increase students’interest in learning, with the emphasis on the principle that everything is done for students, that we respect students’ability, and that we depend on students. At present, the idea of student-based education has attained fruitful results "as it is now widely accepted in numbers of schools. In classes of this kind, students, who are actively engaged in group activities in excitement with great interest, are the real hosts in learning. Homework, as an important part of classroom teaching, is very meaningful to students’study. As a result, the design and evaluation of English homework will affect the effectiveness of English study directly. However, in practical English teaching, the design and evaluation of homework are worrying. According to the analysis of the pre-questionnaire, it has been found that a large portion of homework design followed the traditional way-such rigid and monotonous routine as copying, reciting, question-answering, blank-filling, and translation, and that the evaluation of homework is no more than grading. This method is far from meeting the standard stipulated by the New English Curriculum Reform and the idea of Student-based Education. As students are afraid or tired of English homework, few of them are genuinely willing to do it. For these reasons, the researcher intends to apply this idea to homework design and evaluation. "The idea of student-based in English homework design and evaluation in senior high schools" is meant that students should be put in the first place in designing English homework in senior high schools, as well as the approaches to completing and assessing homework in accordance with the idea put forward by Prof. Guo Sile. The significance of the study lies in exploring a senior high English homework mode that is student-based and conductive to students’ all-round development through the research, the design and evaluation of senior English homework in student-based education. Thus it will contribute to students’development thoroughly. The focus of this paper is to explore, based on the idea of student-based education, the creative methods of designing and assessing homework, for the purpose of arousing students’interest in learning, thus enhancing student’s academic achievement in English teaching of senior high schools. On the bases of constructivist theory, multiple intelligences, and zone of proximal development, a one-term research in No.1 Middle School of Guiyang, Hunan province was conducted. The subjects involved in the experiment are 130 students from two classes- one is Experiment class and the other is Control Class. Experiment Class adopted the design and evaluation of student-based homework while Control Class adopted the traditional homework. Through the experiment, the current study tries to testify the following hypotheses:1. The change in the perception of English homework of the teachers and students will affect the design and evaluation of senior high English homework.2. The student-based design and evaluation of English homework will have a positive influence on students’interest and academic achievement.3. The student-based design and evaluation of English homework will have a good effect on the relationship between the teacher and students. In order to testify the above hypotheses, the researcher employed questionnaires, test papers and interviews as research instruments. The collected data was processed by SPSS20.0. The results were analyzed with quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative analyses involved descriptive statistics got from independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test. The qualitative analyses were based on the information from interviews. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows:1. The change of the perspective in English homework is conductive to the design and evaluation of senior high English homework.2. Students’interest is stimulated in learning English and the academic achievement has been improved.3. The relationship between the teacher and students becomes closer. To sum up, this thesis presents a research on the design and evaluation of senior English homework in the student-based education. The research results demonstrated the design and evaluation of English homework are effective. Students in the experimental class have made a positive change in their attitude to learning English, which contributes to a considerable improvement in interest and achievement. It proves that the change of the traditional view on homework, the emphasis on the variety of homework designing and assessing approach have had a positive effect on senior middle school English learners. |
