Elicit English Formulaic Language Teaching Based On Writing Tasks In A Senior High School: A Case Study

Formulaic language can usually be applied and used in people’s daily life,especially for native speakers due to its high efficiency in communication, such as saving language processing effort in the brain, improving language fluency, and so on.In the later years, researchers began to focus on the field of formulaic language, and categorize them into different types as well.The research in this thesis employs quantitative analysis for attempting to prove that formulaic language teaching in English foreign language learning process plays a pivotal role, especially manifesting in the learners’ writing competence. 40 students from two classes in a senior high school were the participants of this research and their compositions in the two writing tests were the objectives of the research. In the pre-test 20 students in each class were chosen as the participants whose language ability and writing scores were almost in the same level. After formulaic language teaching in one of the classes, the post-test would be taken into the two classes, and students’ scores would be collected. The author compared their writing scores in the pre-test and post-test by SPSS 18.0 and analyzed the relationship between the scores and the use of formulaic language.Based on the collected database and analysis of students’ scores, the result can be inferred that formulaic language teaching plays a key role in the improvement of the students’ language ability. Also, the use of formulaic language has close relationship with students scores in writing tests, and the more formulaic language students use properly in their writing tests, the higher scores they will get. Therefore, formulaic language has been seen as a norm in the judgment of writing compositions and should be put emphasized on English foreign language learning. Also, the author makes some suggestions for the formulaic language researches in the future.
