| University becomes the protagonist of social development, and management level of thecollege managers become a key issue how to guide the universities following the historicaltrend, keeping the needs of the times. The quality and capacity of middle managers, theimportant force of university management, directly impact on the level of universitymanagement, and to some extent determines the competitiveness of university. In this paper,combining the theoretical and empirical, we explore the middle managers’ role behavior inUniversities, as benchmarking for the middle managers and the development ofuniversities.In this study, literature review, interviews and questionnaires are applied.The paperdesigns the scales of universitity middle managers’ role behavior with high reliability andgood validity, then issuing electronic questionnaire to the middle managers in variousuniversity. After a survey of200samples, The paper uses SPSS for exploratory factoranalysis and LISREL for confirmatory factor analysis. On the basis, the study discussed therole differences by the qualitative data.Conclusion indicate that:1.The scale of middle managers’ role behavior in university includes five dimensions:communicators, strategic actors, executors, leaders and innovators.2.Through the analysis of demographic variables,I derived:(1) Gender, occupation andeducation do not significantly differences of universities’ middle manager;(2) TheUniversities’ middle manager under40years old learn new knowledge faster than thatolders, also easier to create and introduce new ideas. They do better in terms of innovationthan those who are more than40years;(3)principal middle manager as a leader in academyor departmental, who have to stand in the global perspective, consider the influence ofvarious factors, thus advice the university leaders for the development.3.There are structure differences between functional deparements and faculties. Found:the chief in functional focus on strategic actors and communicators, the deputy oncommunicators and innovators; The principal role of faculty focus on acting as strategicactor and leader, the deputy to communicators and implementers.Results of this study, provided the basis for the University Personnel and OrganizationDepartments in the selection, training, assessment,career development and other aspects,strengthen the management of the middle managers, solve problems exsiting in reality thatmiddle managers have been based on common competency standards without discrimination, the lack of targeted practice. It also have important practical significance inpromoting the optimization of the middle ranks, ensuring departmental goals, promotingoverall level of school and improving the effectiveness of work. |
