Case teaching method is an effective way to promote students’comprehensive ability in practice and has been widely employed in manyfields of teaching, such as management, law and medical science etc. Asthe subject of urban and rural planning is characterized by integrity,practicality and dynamic nature etc., this study is designed to apply thecase teaching method to the professional teaching of urban and ruralplanning with the purpose of cultivating students’ ability to find outproblems, analyze them and solve them and help students accumulatepractical experiences for their future work.This study mainly consists of four parts. The first part conducts abrief study on the case teaching method and its adaptability in the subjectof urban and rural planning. In this part, it respectively explores thecontent and features of case teaching method, the characteristics of urbanand rural planning and the adaptability of case teaching method. Thesecond part involves the specific implementation of case teaching methodin the professional teaching of urban and rural planning. The writingmethod and the implementation principle and steps of the case teachingmethod in urban and rural planning are discussed in this part. The thirdpart introduces the course practices on case teaching method applied inthe urban and rural planning through the graduate’s course of UrbanDevelopment Programming in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, andevaluates the effect of this method. The last part investigates theapplication of case teaching method in urban and rural planning educationand puts forward relevant measurements. Form of questionnaire surveyand interview are also adopted to investigate teachers and students’ viewon the application effect of case teaching method. As conclusion, methods such as collecting and gathering cases, learning the benchmarking case,establishing the teaching case system and formulating effectivemechanism on case teaching etc. are proposed to promote thedevelopment of case teaching method in urban and rural planningeducation.In short, the application of case teaching method in urban and ruralplanning is not only beneficial for enhancing students’ initiative andenthusiasm on study and producing more interactions between teachersand students in teaching and learning, but also good for cultivatingstudents’ comprehensive quality and advancing the development of urbanand rural planning teaching.
