Writing competence is an important aspect in the process of learning English, which plays a key part in senior high school English examinations. But lack of a complete storage of English knowledge, the Senior High School students still have trouble in writing good compositions. During the process of senior high school students’acquiring English knowledge, prepositions are hard for them to understand and master, which already becomes one of the elements to keep them from improving their learning effects. English is a language of prepositions. Preposition plays a part as a bridge to connect the sentences. But either the linguists or the English teachers focus much on the preposition errors in senior high school students’compositions. The preposition errors contribute to a bad result in their compositions. Checking on whether students use the prepositions properly can identify how well they master English, which should not be ignored in the process of teaching.This paper attempts to summarize the reasons of preposition errors in senior high school students’compositions through a survey and an analysis to seek for the sources of preposition errors and put forward some suggestions on improving both learning and teaching strategies. Based on the survey, this paper also tries to find out some effective measures to improve their English writing competence and writing performance.
