As we know that among the listening, speaking, reading and writing fourBasic English language abilities, the reading is the most important one. Butthe reality of the English reading teaching and learning is not optimistic. Fromthe teachers’ aspect, the problems are as follows: The teaching focuses arestill in the vocabulary and the grammar rather than the reading abilities; theclass is dominated by the teachers; teachers’ personal limits and so on. Fromthe student’s aspect, the problems are much more. They failed to achieve thereading comprehension. The students are losing their interests in English. Thereasons for these problems can be concluded into two categories: one is thethinking of the reading teaching; the other is the approach of the readingteaching. Therefore, to study the reading teaching class and to introduce abetter teaching approach into the class is quite necessary. After brieflyanalyzed the current situations of the senior high schools’ English readingteaching class as well as studied the basic notions about schema theories andreading theories, this thesis claims the idea of application of schema theory toEnglish reading teaching.This thesis mainly contains four parts. Chapter one is the introduction part. It introduced the backgroundinformation, which concerns the current situations and the problems of thesenior high schools English reading teaching. This chapter also introduced theresearch meanings and put forward the research questions. Chapter two is theliterature review part. It firstly discussed the definitions and the classificationof the schema. The schema is the knowledge storage system. It can begenerally divided into three kinds, linguistic schema, content schema andformal schema. This chapter then discussed the notions of the reading theories.The reading is the interaction of the reading materials with the reader’s mind.Then the three major reading models are introduced. They are bottom upmodel, top down model and interactive model. This chapter also introducedthe researches on the application of schema theory to the reading teaching.Chapter three is the experiment part. The research hypothesis is put forward.In this chapter, the research subject and instrument is introduced as well as thedetails of the experiment are presented. And the data collected from theexperiment are analyzed with the statistical software SPSS17.0. Chapter fouris the conclusion part. Being dependent on the data, the experiment wassummarized. Some revelations of this study were also put forward for othersto refer to.It is a long way to the researchers in the study of the reading teaching.They have a lot of work to do. This thesis would make a contribution to thestudies on the schema theory and provide the teachers with a new way of thinking in their teaching of the English reading.
